The reason that I love London is that you can never quite conquer it. There will always be an undiscovered park, a lovely shop, a really cheeky short cut that you don’t know about, no matter how hard you try. But – book shops – now that is an area where I thought I had a basic to strong handle on things. So the discovery of the wonderful Slightly Foxed in the sunshine at the end of last week was a surprise. The shop contained a large collection of fascinating second hand titles (with a particularly huge biography section which kept me a happy browser for ages) and a smattering of well chosen new books. What is more – the Slightly Foxed reader’s quarterly is worth a trip to the shop for alone. It is packed with insightful essays on slightly obscure things, of which, of course, there can never be enough. Monday, July 26, 2010
Slightly foxed that I haven’t discovered this before

This is just up the road from work and I've popped in a couple of times - there's a great atmopshere, isn't there? However when I last went there wasn't the fetching Slightly Foxed awning - perhaps they changed hands recently? I must visit again one sunny lunchtime to find out!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this! This is exactly what you were saying about living in London - you find someplace new every day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic place. I've never been either, but I will now. Thank you, Karen.
ReplyDeleteI will add this to the list of places that I hope to visit the next time I am able to travel to London.
ReplyDeleteIt is a dream of mine to actually be able to spend several months in England some year so that I have the opportunity to truly appreciate all your fabulous country has to offer.
I really enjoy the Slightly Foxed quarterly and would love to go to the shop. Thanks for the photo.
ReplyDeleteOh, it's always so wonderful to find a new bookstore hiding in your neighborhood, so I can totally understand your excitement! I am always on the scout for a new one around here too, but alas, there aren't very many out there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely thing to discover! My Dad subscribes to their quartley review but I didn't know there was a shop too! I shall be rushing there straight away...
ReplyDeleteOh, I do love this place! My work friend and I often go during our lunch break, followed by a visit to Pret for some lovely food! Though has too many nice new books, as well as all the second hand ones - very tempting so have to limit my trips!

I love the name! And now am sad I didn't know about this bookshop the last time I was in London.
ReplyDeleteOh, how fun! I LOVE the name of the store. I hope I can stop by there some day :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm putting it on the itinerary. Thank you, Hannah!
ReplyDeleteThanks Hannah! I'm storing all this very vital info up as a move to London is on the cards! :)
ReplyDeleteI have to walk past it for work sometimes and so always allow extra time. I didn't know about the quarterly though. Last time I popped in they had all the new Bloomsbury books in so I had a lovely chat with the assistant about them.
ReplyDeleteHoping to get there one more time.
ReplyDeleteGood morning all, thank you for visiting and commenting on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI think that they have just finished refitting the shop or something similar but it is certainly open, awning and all now! the staff are very friendly and seem more than willing to have a bookish chat.
I second comments here about the Slightly Foxed Quarterly - it is an excellent collection.
Have happy Thursdays!
Hannah
Bookshops - so lovely to discover a new one!
ReplyDeleteI think my mother subscribes to the quarterly. I didn't realise they had a physical shop - good tip.
ReplyDeleteNever seen it, and I'm living in London. I really should check it out!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip.
Whereabouts is it, Hannah? I'll add it to my list of bookshops for next time I'm in London - hopefully in a week or two.

Hi Hannah, thanks for sharing this post. I would definitely try to visit this shop when I am in London next. If you have an email id that I can mail to, I would love to get some more suggestions of such book stores..
